The UNC Sustainable Energy Research Consortium, SERC, was founded in 2008 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC, to serve as a Hub for energy research, education, and outreach.

SCIENCE

Founded and headquartered in the UNC Chemistry Department, the scientific mission of UNC SERC is to provide the basic research to enable a revolution in the conversion and storage of renewable energy.

EDUCATION

Through its portfolio of funded projects thus far, UNC SERC is training the next generation of energy scientists. More than 80 postdoctoral fellows, 150 graduate students, and 50 undergraduate students have received cutting-edge science and technology training. These trainees have gone on to jobs in the chemical industry, academia, education, government, policy, and other careers.

RESEARCH

The Center has attracted $70+ million dollars in research funding with the current primary award being the Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels (CHASE), a DOE Energy Innovation Hub funded since 2020 by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

UNC SERC has taken a national leadership role scientifically and in the energy sciences public arena through workshops, conferences, symposia, public forums and education. UNC SERC has also taken a leadership role in educating the community by participating in outreach activities, and bringing together industrial, academic and political leaders to discuss the future of solar and renewable energies nationally and in North Carolina.
