2026 Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Application
We are excited to advertise the first year of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Sustainable Energy!
This fellowship is available for undergraduate chemistry majors. The fellowship provides the researcher with a $4,000 stipend for conducting research in energy sciences in the Department of Chemistry over the summer. Recipients are expected to engage in undergraduate research for at least 9 weeks, with a minimum of 20 hours/week during the summer, although some projects may require more than the minimum of 20 hours/week depending on their scope.
We encourage you to apply for this opportunity based on the eligibility below if you are currently or are interested in pursuing energy sciences chemistry research at UNC. Please complete the application (click here to download), and arrange for the faculty member supervising your research to send a letter of support to chemus@unc.edu by the end of the day Friday March 13, 2026.

- Due Date: March 13 (Friday), 2026 11:59 pm
- Materials: A completed application form (link here, save as a PDF) and a letter of support from the supervising faculty mentor (sent directly to chemus@unc.edu)
- Submission process: Email application (PDF preferred) to chemus@unc.edu. Arrange for the faculty letter to be submitted separately.
Note: If you are also awarded the university’s SURF award (https://our.unc.edu/fund/surf/) in addition to one of the departmental summer research awards below, you must decline the departmental award so that you can be awarded the university’s SURF award.
